MOSE JONES - "Lost/Found"

Kickstarter Campaign was SUCCESSFUL!!

The 2nd album RCA album was recorded, mixed, and mastered in 1980, but was never released. All recordings were lost. 30+ years later all of Mose Jones recordings were found and returned to us!

The release of the Mose Jones "Lost / Found" CD is now available! Released in 2013

Listen Now!

These 1980's recordings of original songs followed our popular BLACKBIRD LP (RCA-1978), and was Mose Jones' 4th album. This never released album features Marvin Taylor (Guitar), Randy Lewis (Vocals/Bass) (RIP), Steve McRay (Vocals/Keyboards), and Chris Seymour (Drums), with songs written by Buddy Buie, Randy Lewis, and Steve McRay plus Marvin Taylor and Chris Seymour. All tracks recorded at famed Studio One in Doraville, GA, except for the Muscle Shoals Horns recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound, Muscle Shoals, AL

Our song "Alien" , written by Buddy Buie, Randy Lewis, and Steve McRay, is one of our songs on this "Lost/Found" album. As a side note, in 1981 we were grateful the Atlanta Rhythm Section liked our song and recorded Alien for their "Quinella" album. Then Columbia Records released the song as a 45 single, which made it's way to a top-40 hit - #34 and sending the song to #16 in Adult Contemporary Billboard charts.

After 30+ years of being LOST in storage, the 24 track analog tapes were FOUND and returned to us. All of the tapes were baked, and then transferred from incredible sounding "fat" analog on 2"tape to a high end digital format. The 8 tracks were processed, mixed, and mastered while preserving the pristine sounds of the 24 track analog tapes and that 70's/80's attitude, just as they were recorded, exactly as they sounded, and exactly as we thought they should be!!

We are impressed and amazed by how AWESOME these recordings sound - they sound like they were recorded last week!! The analog fidelity is just amazing! Our engineer on the project had goose bumps when he first heard the raw tracks - he said he hadn't been this impressed with sounds being this good in all his years of studio engineering and producing. We think everyone's going to love this!

WELCOME

Welcome old and new Mose Jones fans to the newly designed "Remembering Mose Jones" website. Thanks for looking around at the years of info and music for this classic and sometimes not so classic Southern Band from Atlanta, GA.

Mose Jones' history in regard to the "Southern sound" is well documented and appreciated by many music insiders. In an exploding era of "Southern Music", e.g., Macon Georgia's Capricorn Records, the Allman Brothers, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Wet Willie, Hydra, Marshall Tucker…to name a few, Al Kooper moved to Atlanta in 1972 to sign up-and-coming Southern bands on his newly created "Sounds of the South" label / MCA Records. The first band he signed, based on their live performances at the Atlanta nightclub FUNOCHIOS, was MOSE JONES, where Al would sit-in and jam to all hours of the night, convinced that Mose Jones had the talent, musicianship and driving sound that he was looking for to kick-start his new label. With the persuading of Mose Jones, the second band Al Kooper signed was a little known band coming up from Jacksonville to play at FUNOCHIOS, whom Mose Jones had become good friends with….that band was - Lynyrd Skynyrd!

Feel free to leave comments and let us hear from you..Also, please check out Big Coffee Records where you can find music and more from Mose Jones. Thanks!!

How it all began

Randy Lewis, Bryan Cole, Jimmy O'Neill, Steve McRay

The Band formed in 1972, with core members from the Florida band "Stonehenge". The band name derived from jazz great "Mose Allison' and a family dog named "Jones". Initially the band was created with Clay Watkins on keys, then during the recording of their first album, replaced by long-time friend Steve McRay (keys and vocals), who had just returned from his stint with the US ARMY and serving in Vietnam. In 1972 Mose Jones was the first band signed by Al Kooper for his startup Atlanta label "Sounds of the South" on MCA Records. Al's "Blues Project" was chosen, and a band named "Elijah". The other band signed to the new label was a little band from Jacksonville that had been playing in Atlanta - that band's name was "Lynyrd Skynyrd".
